I quite liked Theresa May. I think because – like everyone –
I tend to like people like me. And though I never knew her personally, I
listened to her speak - and I just knew.
Knew that she was an introvert, a problem-solver, a thinker –
someone uncomfortable with navigating social situations and chit-chat. Someone
dedicated and passionate in their intellectual pursuits. Someone who would rather prepare in advance than respond in the moment.
And of course that was her undoing: she single-handedly solved
the problem and presented the solution for sign-off - again, and again, and again, and again.
It was a nice illustration of how strengths and weaknesses
play against each other. The real solution to the problem involved
collaboration and consensus – or at least enough self-awareness to recognise
the need for difference: people with a different set of skills, people who
were good at that 'people' stuff. Our strengths are our undoing.
In the end what I admired most was her resilience. Resilience comes
easy for the extrovert, they tend to reflect less, feel less deeply. But the
endless daily barrage – from every quarter – I don’t know how she managed it.
